Unfortunately many tourists who go to Berlin on a limited time budget miss out the attractions of the nearby historic city of Potsdam. Potsdam is most famous as the place where Frederick the Great - King of Prussia - built his splendid palace Sanssouci. And as well known as the city that hosted the Potsdam Conference 1945. The Second World War ended and the Cold War began here.

Potsdam has many attractions beyond Sanssouci. The historic town centre has nicely restored buildings and some good shopping possibilities (Brandenburger Strasse). The red-brick "Dutch Quarter" reflects the influence of settlers from the Netherlands. The Russian colony "Alexandrowka" is proof of the long-lasting (and usually good) relationship between the Prussian Kingdom and the Russian Empire. The "Biosphere" - the most recent attraction - is a unique Botanical Garden (a remnant of a horticultural exhibition).

Directions: 20 minutes by local train from Berlin Central Station
