Completed in 1515 AD, the Siba'iya Madrassa and Mosque dates from the end of the Mamluke-period. It was named after Sibai, the Mamluke governor of Damascus. The structure was built in the signature Mamluke-style with its alternating black and white stripes, muqarnas topped entrance, and wide hexagonal minaret. Al-Siba'iya is located just outside Old Damascus, between Via Recta (Straight Street) and the entrance to Souk al-Hamidiya. As of Dec 09, the Madrassa's fašade is blackened and in need of restoration. Hopefully it will be next!
