Dedicated to Saint George (Mar Girgis), the Syriac Orthodox Cathedral of St George was built in 1951. The interior of the church is quite modest, topped with a lofty dome and lit up with dangling crystal chandeliers. The church is located on Bab Touma Street in the Christian Quarter of Old Damascus. The Syriac Orthodox community is the largest single Christian sect in Syria, numbering over 600,000.
