If you are staying in Kyoto to study and / or work, you should check out the 'gaijin houses'. There are a few I know of, but by far the best for facilities is Ebisu's, which has only been open for a couple of months. The minimum stay is one month.

4.5 mat room = JPY 42,000 ... 6 mat room = JPY 53,000 ...Fully refundable security deposit = 2 month's rent ...Fire insurance (for one year) = JPY 9,000

Unique Qualities: SHARE: 24/7 cable net access via iMacs, color printer,cable tv, microwave oven, 2 gas cooking stoves, big refigerator, 2 western-style toilets, 2 showers, coin-operated washing machine, quiet location, wonderful views from the upstairs rooms, one person per Japanese-style room. Has a garden.

Price Comparison: less expensive than average
Directions: Ebisu's is a 7 minute walk from the Konoe-doori bus stop, near Kyoto University, Kyoto Handicraft Center, Yoshida Shrine, and Heian Shrine.
