"Getting close to the genius" Van Gogh Museum Tip by northernlady

The Museum facade is distinctly unimpressing, however please don't let this put you off as it is an amazing couple of hours. It's quite a walk from Dam square and what we thought was the main shopping area (we got a taxi to save on time, came to 4 Euros each for two of us) but is completely worth while. Inside, the museum has a really clean and contemporary feel, really impressive looking- plus the gallery is laid out so as to seperate his work in to each important period of his life which really helps you appreciate them a lot more. On the top floor there was also an exhibition of all of Van Gogh's hand written letters, many to his brother Theo, on subjects such as love, death and the quality of his own work. The gift shop is also brilliant, really big and well organised with not a trace of tackiness- I got two fab books and a beautiful print of my fave Van Gogh work, 'The Bedroom'.
All in all, please go. I certainly intend to return in the near future.
