"National Football League Hall of Fame" Ohio Things to Do Tip by Ewingjr98

Ohio Things to Do: 157 reviews and 295 photos

Officially named the Pro Football Hall of Fame, it really should be called the NFL Hall of Fame, since it is run by the NFL and only includes other professional leagues (like the USFL and XFL) after the NFL runs them out of business. Even today the Canadian Football League is excluded.

It opened in Canton, Ohio, United States, on September 7, 1963. Canton was selected for the HOF because it was the birthplace of the NFL in 1920 and the Canton Bulldogs were a successful franchise for many years. I also like to think this is a special site because it is nearly midway between Pittsburgh and Cleveland, the epicenters of the AFC Central.

HOF players are selected by a 44-person panel made up mostly of sportswriters from current NFL cities. 80 percent support is required to gain entrance into the hall, and the annual class is required t be from four to seven people (if any of the top four vote getters are below 80% they are automatically selected).
