For those interested in the evolution of the Gothic style, Viollet-le-Duc during his restoration of Notre Dame, returned a few bays at the junction of the transept and choir to their original appearance. In the 13C with the addition of the flying buttresses it was found that more window space and light could be added by elongating the clerestory windows down to the tall tribunes, thus eliminating the oculi below them. Obviously the tall Rayonnant style is more attractive but he felt history should be served. The church itself as a whole is impressive in its height and width as seen in any clear views (hard to do with the crowds that are usually there; on special occasions there have been over 9000 people inside!).
