Located in a grove of woods surrounded by farm fields in northern Ohio about ten miles south of the town of Bellevue, you find the Shrine of the Sorrowful Mother which, dating back to 1850 and Father Francis de Sales Brunner - a Swiss missionary priest of the Order of the Most Precious Blood - claims to be the oldest Catholic pilgrimage site dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the Midwest. The present chapel dates to 1914 while the immense outdoor chapel was added in 1968 to accommodate the numerous busloads of pilgrims that come in from the nearby large Catholic ethnic communities found in Toledo, Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit and others. Trails lead among the trees of the grove leading to the Stations of the Cross, replicas of the Lourdes Grotto and other memorials devoted to various Saints. The pathways ae flat and the whole trail is but a mile in length. The Shrine is definitely an interesting venue of another portion of the American religious palette.
