Located on the northern side of Old Damascus by the River Barada, Bab al-Salam (means "Gate of Peace") is a gate through the old city walls. It was built in the 12th century by the Zengid ruler, Nureddine, and was restored a century later during the Ayyubid period. It stands on the site of the Roman Gate of the Moon, and is considered the most complete, architecturally, of the surviving gates of Old Damascus.
