One easy day trip to arrange while on Santa Cruz is to Las Plazas. This small island off the northeast coast of Santa Cruz is on the three day itinerary of all cruise ships and for good reason. It's a beautiful place and a great one to see breeding cliff dwelling bird life. After the prerequisite bus ride through the highlands from Puerto Ayora to the far north of the island, you hop on a boat and enjoy a very pleasant ride past rock outcroppings until you come to the scenic Plaza islands, north and south. The south island is where the boat ties up and no sooner are you there and you're in a huge colony of sea lions bellowing loudly, trumpeting your arrival. Some are content to sleep on the rocks and it all makes for great photographic opportunities. Unfortunately, our guide explained that snorkeling here was not allowed due to the size of the pod as well as number of aggressive bull males.
Directions: Las Plazas are two sister islands off the northeast coast of Santa Cruz.
