The Tortoise Breeding Center of Isabella is much nicer than the Charles Darwin Center on Santa Cruz. The tortoises seem to have more space and the caretaker really seems to love his job. On our first visit he spoke lovingly of his little horde. When we returned early the next morning we found them to be much more active. Once the caretaker recognized us he started to feed them. The sure were ready for it as many repeatedly opened their mouths in what was obviously not a yawn! They can weigh up to 250 kilos and live over 100 years feeding on various plants including cacti which is readily found on the islands. Their numbers were once close to 300,000 but mass slaughter during the 18th and 19th centuries for food and oil decimated their populations and only conservations groups have kept them from extinction. From Puerto Villamil head out of town in the opposite direction as the docks and you'll see the clearly marked path that also passes a pool noted for being home to flamingos.

Directions: From Puerto Villamil (Isabella) head out of town in the opposite direction as the docks and you'll see the clearly marked path on your right that also passes a pool noted for being home to flamingos.
