Isabella was the second island we made a base on. It is not only the Galapagos biggest island but it makes up 58% of the entire archipelago's land mass! Oddly enough the cruise ships do not include this amazing place on their itineraries especially when we made a few Ecuadorians that had been lucky enough to have visited the islands more than once and they said Isabella was by far their favorite. The main town is Puerto Villamil, a charming backwater town with sandy streets and swaying palms. Despite the lack of development there is enough of an infrastructure and things to do to make a week's stay not out of the question especially if you like strolling on beautiful beaches, wildlife viewing, and snorkeling. The locals are very laid back and the whole place has a sleepy island feel to it. To be honest, the only real drawback we noticed was a lack of decent places to eat. No ATM so bring cash.
Directions: Small boats do the run between Santa Cruz and Isabella every day. The trip takes about three hours depending on the conditions and costs $30 each way.
