Republic of Macedonia Things to Do: 160 reviews and 489 photos
If you follow the river Vardar from the town Veles via the archaeological site Stobi to the southeast, you will reach a point where the surrounding mountains force the river through the Iron Gate Mountain gorge. The valley between the mountains is maybe 50m wide.
Demir Kapija means Iron Gate in Turkish and refers to the fact that invaders into Macedonia had to pass though this narrow corridor, and were often slaughtered on exiting the Iron Gate.
There is a small stopping place for cars next to the road, in the middle of the tunnel between two rock towers. The pictures were taken here.
You can do rock climbing here, as well as hikes.
