The palais was built 1881-1884 for the banker August Schmieder. From 1899 on it was inhabited by Prince Max von Baden, who became the last chancellor of the German Empire during the last months of World War I - he was the one who negotiated the armistice and capitulation in November 1918.
The Prinz-Max-Palais contains
the Stadtmuseum (museum of history of the city),
the museum of literature in the Upper Rhine Valley and its library,
a children's library,
and the cinema of the Kinemathek, which shows films commercial cinemas wouldn't show.
