One of the oldest museums of fine arts in Germany, opened in 1846. The permanent exhibition is based on the art collection of the Marggraves and later Granddukes of Baden and religious art that became property of the state in the secularization of the dioceses and monasteries after 1803.
Their treasure are excellent masterpieces of medieval art. The department of modern and contemporary art is shown in a separate building, the nearby Orangerie, which has just been reopened after restoration in 2007. Besides, they show notable temporary exhibitions.
The Kusthalle was among the first museums that started programs in museum education for children, which have become their speciality.
