Tantalus, in Greek mythology was a son of Zeus known for his misdeeds. He was, for this, condemned to Tartarus (the underworld) up to his chin in water that receded whenever he bent to drink and under some branches of fruit that also were unreachable. From his name comes the word tantalize meaning to tease or torment with that which is desired.
Just outside of Honolulu a much more pleasant attraction bears this same name. I believe Tantalus in this case could be used to suggest that only the beautiful distant views can be achieved. Pictures do not do this place justice at all. In the evening it is also a great place to see the stars.
When flowers are in bloom the smells add yet another pleasantry to the drive. When I went the smells of lavender and something like oranges were very strong. There are also many recreational activities to do during the day. Many trailheads start around the summit of Mount Tantalus.

Dress Code: It can get fairly chilly up there so you may want to bring some warmer clothes. This may not be a "dress code" but I would recommend going up there with a convertible car so you can get the full affect and views of the stars.

Directions: From H-1 take the Pali Hwy (61) exit then a quick right on S School St. Then turn Left on Lusitana St. Next go right on Puowaina dr which turns into Tantalus. From there go about 3 miles up a winding road to excellent viewpoints.
