Ouarzazate is situated at the south of the High Atlas (picture 4) and a starting point to the Draa Valley, the Kasbah route and the desert. The first time I stayed in Ouarzazate was in November 1975 at the campsite. I can remember the impressive kashah de Taourirt with people gathering and dancing in front because of the Green March of King Hassan (350.000 Moroccans, who walked over the border of Western Sahara to claim the region).

After I only crossed the town a few times on my trips, I came back in 2008 to spend more time in the town. I took the time to visit the kasbah of Taourit, one of the most beautiful ones in Morocco. Once it housed members of the Glaoui dynasty (Picture 1&2).

The main street in town is the Avenue Mohammed V (picture 5) with shops, banks and restaurants. It's also the main road connecting Tinerhir and Marrakech. North of this avenue is a souq and the Place al Mouahidme (picture 3) with a nice Patisserie with a shaded terrace overlooking the square.

For more information look at my Ouarzazate page.

Directions: Ouarzazate is about 200 south-east of Marrakech at the other side of the High Atlas. The last time we came to Ouarzazate by plane with Air Maroc from Casablanca.
