The griffin (Greif) is Baden's heraldic animal and shield holder. Two griffins hold the coat of arms of Baden.
The coat of arms of today's Federal State of Baden-Württemberg is held by a griffin (for Baden) and a stag (for Württemberg).
The griffin is a legendary creature with a lion's body, an eagle's head and wings. (Not to be confused with a hippogriff, which has a horse's body instead ;-))
If you keep your eyes open, you'll find the symbol of the griffin everywhere in Karlsruhe. The most prominent one is the one on top of the Grenadier monument in Europaplatz (a monument for First World War soldiers), but there are more. Even the logo of the BNN, Karlsruhe's local newspaper, contains two griffins.
