  Panama City Beach

Panama City Beach lies along the Gulf of Mexico. With its emerald waters and sugar white beaches, it has become a popular resort town. During college Spring Break, thousands of college students come to Panama City for their holiday. During this Spring Break time, big name sponsors arrive in Panama City Beach with free giveaways, contests, rock climbing walls, giant inflatable slides, bands, and other fun activities. You will also find a few rides designed to give you a scare and a thrill located along the beachfront street. One such ride was a tall arch on which an enclosed elevator rises. As we watched, a door opened up and a young person jumped out of the door with a huge bungee chord attached to a harness he was wearing, then the student bounced up and down, until he slowed enough to be retrieved. Another bungee type ride looked like two tall arms of large cranes, with a small cage containing two seats hanging from bungees between them. The cage was stretched way down toward the ground, then released like a big slingshot, shooting the chairs and its riders up into the air, causing it to bounce down and up until it slowed. We happened to visit Panama Beach during Spring Break. There were college students everywhere, students in cars, in the back of pick-ups, on motorcycles, on foot, girls dressed in bikini swimsuits and boys in swim trunks. Airplanes were flying over with advertisements streaming behind. One of these was advertising that MTV was broadcasting from one of the area beaches. There were also a number of college students in the campground where we stayed. I was quite impressed with these students. They were very well behaved, and respectful of others in the campground, not at all loud or rowdy.

This is also a popular area for families with children and retirees. Golf courses, fishing, scuba diving, restaurants, shops, and the beautiful beach are all draws. There are many professional charters available for fishing, diving, snorkeling, and other trips out onto the Gulf of Mexico. Further outdoor adventures can be enjoyed at St. Andrews State Preserve, which borders the town?s public beach, and the fishing pier. Or, take a boat trip to nearby Shell Island for swimming and shell collecting.

Directions: Located in the panhandle of Florida, Panama City Beach is across the bridge, just west of its sister city, the larger and older Panama City.
