This is a somewhat new & very small restaurant in the heart of the Tenderloin. Brenda, a Filipina New Orleans native, is the owner & chef. She used to be a chef at Cafe Claude for a time. Although relatively unknown to most San Franciscans, Brenda's is quite popular. They are open from 8-3, Monday through Saturday; serving breakfast & lunch M-F, & brunch on Saturday. I arrived at 10:00 a.m. on a Saturday morning to find the place packed, with about 5 people waiting outside. I signed my name on waiting list &, because I was dining alone, was seated at the counter within 5 minutes.

Favorite Dish: I tried one of the specials that day -- the fried catfish po boy ($9.50). It was catfish served on a toasted French roll with tomato, lettuce & (what I believe was) aioli. The dish also came with fries. I enjoyed the po boy thoroughly. It was flavorful enough for San Francisco taste buds, though was probably a little subdued in taste for those highly familiar with New Orleans cooking. The portion was of a decent size. I washed down the po boy with a glass of sweet watermelon iced tea, which was very refreshing & not too sweet.

Also on the menu are beignets (even a crawfish one!), a croque monsieur, egg dishes, fritatta, a sloppy Josephine, grits, hash, gumbo, pancakes, & fried oyster, as well as fried shrimp po boys. The best part of all -- nothing is over $10.00.

I will definitely eat here again.
