The autograph tree. Coole Park, Co. Galway

Coole Park was once the home estate of Lady Augusta Gregory and is now a national park with 1000 acres of serene woodland. Lady A.G. was a dramatist and folklorist and a general supporter of the arts. Many great Irish writers and poets were drawn here for inspiration. W.B. Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, and Sean O' Casey all frequented the estate, and you see the names of many of these writers carved, by their own hands, in the autograph tree. There are two easy walking trails through the park, as well as a visitor center that features videos of the history on the park and Lady Gregory, though I did not go in.

It's a very nice place for peaceful stroll, a picnic, or just hanging around.

Admission to the park is free

Address: N18, Gort, Co. Galway
Directions: Coole Park is located just off the N18, 3km north-west of the heritage town of Gort in Co. Galway, which is in the west of Ireland.
