Inaugurated in 1889, the legendary Cataract Hotel was built to capitalise on increasing European tourism by providing travellers with European-style accommodations in this distant land. Over its 100+ years, the Cataract has hosted an endless list of historic figures, such as Agatha Christie and François Mitterand, to name only two. The former wrote her novel Death on the Nile at this very hotel, while Mitterand was a regular visitor. The hotel's position overlooking the granite islands of the Nile at the southern tip of Aswan, surrounded by lush gardens, is spectacular. This landmark building is still a hotel, now known as Old Cataract Hotel and is run by the Sofitel/Accor group. Due to strict security, entering the hotel grounds may be difficult if one is not staying at the hotel. However, foreigners should have less of a problem, especially with a restaurant reservation.
Address: Abtal el-Tahrir Street
