"Interpretive Exhibits" Fort Matanzas National Monument Favorite Tip by grandmaR
Fort Matanzas National Monument General: 1 reviews and 5 photos
Favorite thing: Matanzas was important back in the early settlement days because the French had a fort at Jacksonville (Fort Caroline) and the Spanish were in St Augustine. The French boat wrecked off Matanzas and the Spanish at St. Augustine prevented them from getting to Fort Caroline.
Florida was important to Spain because it was close to the Gulf Stream and that was the route of the treasure ships.
Fondest memory: The first time we visited we saw the video tape and got the passport stamped, but the nature trail was closed for the month of January for them to work on it. Bob refused to take the shuttle boat to the fort because it was too cold.
We did get to visit by boat in 2013
