We finally got around to trying dinner at Lallapalooza. This restaurant sits in the heart of old Monterey, so is very popular among both locals and tourists. The inside is a little classier than the average downtown Monterey restaurant, but its lower-than-average prices and relatively straightforward American dishes attract a mixed group of college students, military, and even local high school kids. They have a great wine selection and some good beer options in a huge and unusual 22 once glass ($7.50 each). The menu has a wide variety of steaks, pastas, seafood, chicken, pork, and more.
For dinner the three of us had their angus cheeseburger ($10), skillet half chicken ($17), and the pork chops ($22). The burger looked very tasty, and it came with an option of sweet potato fries, regular fries, or spicy "firecracker fries." I had the boneless skillet half chicken over rice and broccoli; this was a very tasty meal with the chicken perfectly done and the rice perhaps a little too salty. The pork chops on the other hand.... they reminded me why I seldom eat pork in restaurants. When they came out they looked good on the outside, but when cut they were cold, red, and raw inside--absolutely disgusting! We gave them back to the waitress and she didn't seem too concerned, but she was glad to ask the cook to throw them back on the fire for a few minutes. When they returned they were much better, and they were hand delivered by the manager who offered an apology and free deserts for the table. So we tried both the chocolate cake and the apple pie on the house. Both were as good as the meals, and I'm not much of a dessert guy. Maybe things that are free taste better!?!
