The Barras: "The Barras" Scotland Shopping Tip by kat-m

Scotland Shopping: 35 reviews and 40 photos

The Barras is not a shop but a mixture of an open air market come small booth type stalls which can be under a roof or outside in (usually) the cold. You can probably find anything you want at the Barras (barras is glaswegian for Barrows). Before motor vehicles etc if you wanted to sell your wares you would of course have peddled them from you barra. The whole place is an exciting buzz of everything you ever heard about Glasgow. You will not fail to have possibly a great laugh, a strange encounter or 2! and you can taste the local cuisine of chips, stovies, square sausage and all other unhealthy foodstuffs you can think of. On a recent visit I had the pleasure of being entertained at an atm queue by some locals practising a golf drive with clubs which had either just come from the barras or were on the way there.

What to buy: A great place to find something a little bit special. The antique you thought you would never find or the music album you heard long ago.
