From the main etrance there is a long path that leads into the fortress, you pass trough 2 other gates. There you find the fortress walls. Follow to the left. Some of the walls are 12 meters high and 10 meteres thick. You can walk along an adjoing wall as well. You find a watchtower, from where you have views at the Asenova quarter. A bit further you find the 12 th cenury monastery, dwells and a couple of curhes (remains) There is also an execution rock, from wich traitors were pushed into the river. Going east, in the middle of the field you pass several moden bells and the ruins of a nobleman?s dwelling and some churches remains. You then find the Royal Palace. Here the 22 kings ruled Bulgaria. You can follow the steps upto the patriarchal complex, also called the church of the blessed savior. It was build in 1235. The views you have here at the town are great. At the end of the southern wall of the fortress you find the Baldwin tower, here Baldwin 1 th from Flaners was once imprisoned.
