There are many things to see at St.-Denis if you have exhausted the more conventional sights in Paris. It is easy to get there and will take only 2 hours on site to see it all and be back to Paris for lunch. The Basilica contains 79 effigies of French Royalty and notables and several tombs of great sculptural worth and reknown. The ambulatory at the lower level is exactly as Suger had it made; it is of course the seminal piece of Gothic style. The Rayonnant Gothic overlay is the first example of that style. The small Rose window in the West facade is the first of that species. The restorations by Viollet-le-Duc make it a text-book of architecture of its time. An audio-guide is indispensible in looking at the tombs . Do not overlook the crypt. If these subjects do not interest you, stay away. (We and others have Yips in the appropriate place under Ile-de-France).
