It is important to drink lots of water in Sudan because the temperatures are very high most of the year. Most visitors depend on bottled water to drink, which is widely available. However, the local tap water in most areas, except during the flood season when the colour changes because of the suspended Nile silt, is safe to drink if you are stuck. Everywhere there will be earthenware pots of water outside houses, shops etc or at the roadside. The old tin cans , jam jars and metal cups provided may not be hygienic, but if you carry a plastic cup, then it should be OK. The large jars keep the water cool, and any sediment settles at the bottom of the jar.
