Fireworks are available for purchase/use in Beijing for only one month every year, leading upto the Chinese New Years.

Everybody in the city stockpiles a massive quantity for the three day New Year celebration, unleasing a torrent of noise and light everywhere you go. Back alleys, main roads, parks, shopping mall entrances. Everywhere except for Tienanmen square, where the police search everyone to make sure they don't cause a ruckus...

The fireworks are cheap and powerful.
I stopped at a stand in the country (returning from Mutianyu) and filled up my backpack for about $4.

Have fun! :)
And be careful!
