The Alfama is a lively neighbourhood at the foot of the castle São Jorge. It's a picturesque district with whitewashed houses, a tangle of steep alleys and stepstreets, squares and gates. Between the fluttering laundry you have a marvelous view over the city, the port and the river.
If you take tram 12 to the castle and from there start to saunter, you can't get lost: if you always walk downwards you finally reach the river.

Address: 1100-172 Alfama, Lisbon
Directions: Alfama, quarter between river and castle
