The Duke is a brand new gastropub located just off Richmond High Street. It is housed in a old pub that has undergone extensive renovation and it looks fab. This is a perfectly formed gastropub (so you gastropub-haters should look elsewhere), with a comfy bar area towards the entrance and the main dining area to the rear, complete with mis-matched furniture and above average pub food.
Opening in Dec 2007, by the time we visited in Feb 2008 the word had spread and we were lucky to get a table for Sunday lunch. The atmosphere was great, and our table permitted us a glimpse of the hive of activity in the kitchen. Service was very friendly and we warmed to the place immediately, adding it to our rotation of Sunday lunch venues before we had even tried the food.
Favorite Dish: Thankfully the food was great! Alex had the Beef & Guinness Pie with Mash, and I had the Roast Beef with veg and a Yorkshire pudding. Loved the flavoursome pie and very creamy rosemary scented mash, and the Roast beef was beautifully rare.
Although our meals were filling, we thought it was our duty, for the good of this review at least, to sample a dessert. How could we go past the Sticky Toffee pudding with praline ice cream. Our waitress assured us it was the best around, and she was right - good consistency pudding with very delicious toffee sauce, kind of like a salted caramel sauce, and creamy praline ice cream. A gold star on the STP rating list.
