We swung by Won Ju one night when nearby Crystal Fish Sushi was packed and they were in no hurry to clear tables for the 10-15 customers who were waiting by the door. Won Ju seemed like a good alternative, since we were kind of in a hurry to meet a friend later. We were immediately seated in the restaurant that was maybe half full. While we looked over the menu they brought out a pot of steaming hot green tea. We decided on the bulgogi dinner for two ($30) which starts with an outstanding jeon (Korean pancake with onions, pepper, and other veggies) that was--without a doubt--the highlight of the meal. Next we were served a variety of seven small side dishes including the obligatory kimchi, spinach, two kinds of bean spouts, sliced pickled radish, an odd dish of what might be mung beans, and a great spicy dish of marinated pepper and garlic. While we were munching on the sides, the waitress brought the bowl of bean curd soup, then the bulgogi and rice.

For $30 this is a great variety of food, especially for the Korean food novice who might not know what to order. My only complaint was the relatively small size of the side dishes... and no offer of seconds (Monterey's other Korean restaurant Na Ra always brings seconds of the sides!). The bulgogi was some of the best I've ever had (even better than some I tried in Korea), and the side dishes very authentic.

Other options for Korean in the Monterey area are Na Ra on Tyler Street in downtown Monterey, Orient Express on Fremont Street in Seaside, and numerous Marina restaurants including Shin La.

In 2005 the Monterey County Weekly named Won Ju the Best Korean Restaurant in Monterey County.
