"Bathe Japanese Style" Japan Things to Do Tip by dancinbudgie

We were all apprehensive about the whole communal bathing thing, but now that we are back in Australia we miss it! This is one of the most sociable and relaxing customs I have ever come across. For the unanitiated...there is a changing area where you place your clothing in baskets. Take your 'modesty' towell (a small cloth used to cover your most private 'bits' whilst walking to and from the bath), and sit yourself at one of the washing 'stations'. Wash yourself thoroughly and rinse clean...it is very important not to get soap etc in the bath. Next, force yourself to slide into the water (it will feel at first like you are cooking-but you'll get used to it) and relax. When you are done push as much water as you can off youself before heading back into the change room to dress in your Yakata, and that's it!
We had all kinds of baths, indoor, outdoor, cave, roman, hot spring (onsen), private and public. Unfortunately, we couldn't take many photo's as people tend to be (understandably) a bit wary of naked strangers with camera's ( especially when they themselves are naked), and so we could only take photo's when we found ourselves alone.
