This is a tough walk. I originally set out just to do the first part to the Alpine Mosaic, just five minutes up the trail but, thinking it was two hours return I decided to set out for Lake Belcher.
Unfortunately, it is two hours one way and all I had left was three hours.
Still, I pushed on past the mosaic and headed out across the swamp, where every footstep has to be planned. After about 20 minutes of this it becomes quite tiresome and then you think you have found an oasis of sorts when you reach a slightly wooded area.
Unlucky, then you have rocks set at all sorts of odd angles to negotiate and the going gets worse when you clear that and are beside Mount Mawson.
From there on it's downhill over difficult rocky terrain. In fact, it's the toughest "made" trail I've ever been on. An hour into the journey I ascertained that, in fact, it was a four hour return journey and the massive scree slope I had reached looked like making my legs a lot more tired than they were already so I turned back.
