<p>In the north-east province of Guantanamo, the city of Baracoa is quite ?off the beaten path? , especially if you trust in ?tourist information? saying that the only way to reach the town is by taxi from Santiago (US $100). Fortunately, I shared the taxi with a Swiss boy that I met thanks to a nice lady, working at the tourist information office.
But, being a bit sceptical, once I reached Baracoa, I went to the bus station to check my information.
There?s a daily bus to and from Santiago for US $ 8!!
Lot of history in Baracoa: the first Spanish settlement date back to 1512 and the first struggle against colonialism started here.
Beautiful landscape along the road to/from Santiago. The road skirts around the U.S.A. naval base of Guantanamo ? very strange situation. The lease will end in 2033.
