We arrive at our last portion of the walk, at the Louvre where much of this began. This is apropos as the beginning of our walk is just across the Pont des Arts at the Institut de France!
In 1190, Philippe-Auguste built a fortress consisting of the Grosse Tour (yes, that's quite descriptive name - BIG TOWER) to the west of the wall; that fortress, while not initially a royal residence eventually became the Louvre as we know it today. If you go below the museum, you'll see the base of towers as well as walk through moats originally constructed by Philippe-Auguste and Charles V from the 12th through the 14th centuries.
1 - Base of one of the Louvre's Tower built by Philippe-Augustus and only recently excavated.
2 - Model of Old Louvre from the time of François I.
3 - Vestiges of Medieval Louvre as it originally looked. In the center you can see the round portion of the tower which is roughly where the fountain in the Cour Carrée now sits.
4 - Model of Medieval Louvre.
5 - If you look closely in the photo you can see an hourglass-shaped stonecutter's trademark sign which the stonecutters used to mark their work in order to receive payment. It's the equivalent of a modern-day signature.
And that concludes our tour of the Philippe-Auguste enclosure - à bientôt!
