Don Cafeto's: "Authentic in both price and taste!" Don Cafeto's Restaurant Tip by wilocrek

Don Cafeto's Restaurant, Tulum: 6 reviews and 7 photos

The main street of Tulum is simply teeming with different Restaurants. Sadly many of them are overpriced and generic and seem to pander to tourist expectations of high prices. My expectations of Mexican restaurants is that the food is authentic and the price is low. Don Cafeto's is the only restaurant in Tulum that fits the bill. I judge a good Mexican restaurant on two basic things, their salsa and chips and tortillas. If the restaurants chips look they are store bought and their salsa tasteless it does not bode well for the entree's. Don Cafeto's chips are delicious and clearly homemade, as some of the chips are thicker than others and the shapes and sizes varied. The salsa was wonderful in both texture and taste. Its not too spicy but spicy enough, exactly what your would expect from an authentic Mexican restaurant. The tortillas were made out of corn as our most of the tortilla's in the region, I don't believe they even serve flour tortillas in the Yucatan! Unlike other restaurants in Tulum the tortillas at Don Cafeto's weren't stuck together and weren't soggy as though they had been heated up in a microwave. Like most of the places in Tulum, its an open air restaurant, meaning that while its covered the entire entrance to the restaurant is open and faces the street. On most days they had live music, usually a guy with a guitar or on a electronic piano. The entree's are of a standard Mexican fare, I can personally recommend the fajitas and the breaded catfish as excellent! The service is excellent and the majority of the servers speak English. The entree's average between $8 and $12. I have sampled the majority of the restaurants in Tulum in three visits to the region and Don Cafeto's has became a culinary mainstay of my visits.

Comparison: less expensive than average
Directions: Don Cafeto's is located just within Tulum's city limits on the east side of Main street (route 307)
