When land begins to become rare and expensive, the houses become more and more high and narrow; in old Hanoi, this usage began in the 18th century at least, and good example is the restaurant ?69? (It is a regular restaurant, despite that name. . . ), 69, Ma May street, old district, which, by the way is a cosy restaurant, with quite good food, with. . one room (10-12 tables on the first floor) per level and a staircase, of course.
The vertical tradition has been maintained and these buildings decorate and catch the glimpse when walking around in the modern city.
The pictures show a few samples from Ba Dinh district (south of Ho Tay Lake), Cau Giay district (near the Museum of Ehtnology), Hoan Kiem District, near the Red River. All sorts of styles seem to be used for these constructions.
