Bay Mau Lake, located in the Thong Nhat Park is apparently the second largest lake of Hanoi ; only for the quietude, a rest from the hektic atmosphere of the city, it deserves a visit. Like other lakes it is used in the same time as a wastewater pond and a recreation area! Very little is noticeable from waste, there are fishes and crawfishes in the lake, so it seems the pollution is (for the time!) not that bad.
There is one big restaurant on the Eastern shore of the lake, but the interesting things are the gardens and park around.
An orchid garden (no flowering orchids when I visited), not well maintained, can be visited free, when open (I was not able to find business hours), probably all times; the orchid picture (Picture2) is from another garden, from an official building where I worked during my stay in Hanoi.
A quiet atmosphere prevails when walking on the shores of the lake.
Basins and water fountains decorate nicely the Thong Nhat Park (Picture4), where it is very relaxing to walk far from the noise of the city. Some statues also decorate that park (Picture 5).
For interested people, there is a 3 km jogging track around that lake.

Address: Tran Nan Tong street
Directions: One km south of the old city.
