"PUNO : LAGO TITICACA / UROS FLOATING ISLANDS" Peru Things to Do Tip by swesn

Peru Things to Do: 659 reviews and 852 photos

At 3,855m, Lago Titicaca is said to be the highest navigable lake in the world.

Hence, the key thing to do in Puno is to hire a boat and navigate the lake. There are many tour agencies around Puno which organise trips to the lake, so you need not fret about where to rent such a boat.

The most interesting place you will be brought to on the boat trip is a sample of 'floating islands' by the Uros people. These people use reeds to build boats, houses and even the foundations of their islands. Their traditional activities include fishing in the lake. Women are now waiting for tourists on some selected islands to sell some handicrafts made from... naturally... reed. The men are usually fixing nets, building or repairing boats. Some will take the tourists on the reedboat for a chance to experience how it is like.

When I stepped on the island, there was a sense of insecurity as each of my step was rather springy and I just was not sure whether I would step right through and into the water. It is indeed very interesting to view these islands and admire the blue lake and blue sky from here.
