  Beach Number 7
by janiebaxter

Beach number 7 was voted best beach inAsia by Time magazine in 2004. From what we saw, it is certainly the best beach on Havelock Island. It is 2km long and is quite wide compared to the other beaches. It is very sandy with no rocks or pebbles so is great for swimming. Most of the time we found the sea calm here but it did get a little rough the last few days with big waves. However they break close to shore in quite shallow water. The elephants often walk down the beach - Rajan the old male and also the 2 females who you can ride.
You will often see local fishermen fishing with nets from the shore, and we saw local boys come down to the sea to give their cows a wash one day. The beach is a nice mix of local life and people with tourists but is so big it doesn't get too crowded. It is busiest at the end near the main road, and as you walk further along towards Niels Cove it gets very quiet. By the main road end there are some food and drink stalls - unfortunately we couldn't find a bar to get a sundowner and had to get a beer from Barefoot resort.

Directions: To get to Beach number 7 from the jetty, go towards the town centre and turn right at the roundabout. Carry on along the main road until you see a sign directing you right to beach number 7. Go past the stalls and you are on the beach.
