Frankfurt has an especially lovely Botanical Garden - the Palmengarten - which is a must-see for all horticuluralists and plant-fanciers. There are beautiful beds of local and exotic flowers, ranges of shrubs and trees from around the corner and around the globe, and more glasshouses than you can possibly visit in a few hours' visit. I especially loved the cactus and orchid houses!

The Palmengarten has been a center for botanical research for more than a century, and there are many interesting historical and cultural exhibits, as well as "natural" ones. The Palmengarten does charge an admittance fee of five euros for adults, but it's certainly money well spent. I'll be returning here on future trips to the city.

Check out more Palmengarten photos in my travelogue - I visited on a beautiful autumn morning in October 2007, and it was especially pleasant because I was one of only a very few people walking around. I felt as if it was my own private garden!

Directions: about three km northwest of the city center
