"Heldenplatz" Heldenplatz - Heros Square Tip by heitzenrater
Heldenplatz - Heros Square, Vienna: 17 reviews and 40 photos
It was on this very square where Adolf Hilter, from a stage of the new Hofburg, announced the "Anschluss" (annexation) of Austria to the Third Reich in the year 1938. The crowds were cheering for him at Heldenplatz which from this time on became a symbol for collaboration with the III.
The square itself is huge, with grass areas and two dominating statues of riders. One of them represents Prince Eugen, the other one is Archduke Karl. If you walk up to the main entrance of Heldenplatz, you will enjoy an astonishing view over the Ringstrasse, the Museum of Historic Art and the Museum of Natural Science, Parliament, the Town Hall and the Museum of Ethnology.
So as mentioned when you are here you are next to Hofburg. You can see Neue Hofburg building in the background of the main picture. I also included a picture of Amalienburg.
The website provided give a background history of Hitler's speech at Heldenplatz. It was very interesting.
