Pilsudski was the Polish military leader in the time after World War One, when Poland regained its independence. His best-known feat was the unexpected defeat of the Red Army in 1920 near Warsaw with the double result that an invasion of war-weary Europe by the communists could be averted and the akquisition of large parts of Bjelorussia and the Western Ukraine by Poland. Pilsudski continued then to serve Poland in different political functions and was the major figure of Polish politics in the inter-war-years. His statue stands on Pilsudski Square, near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Saski Gardens.
