"Marx-Engels Forum - Green side of Alexanderplatz" Marx Engels Forum Tip by Ekaterinburg
Marx Engels Forum, Berlin: 13 reviews and 19 photos
Marx-Engels Forum is rather a grandiose name for what's in reality a typically inner-city park without much in the way of embellishment. But it is a green space and the pleasures of grass and trees in the middle of so much traffic and concrete cannot be over-estimated.
No chilling out for tourists though because bang slap in the middle of the park are the monumental bronze statues of Marx and Engels by Ludwig Engelhardt. Attempting to get a photo without someone else in the frame requires quite a bit of circling and steely glances but patience usually wins out in the end. Whatever your feelings about communism, Marx or Engels, these are seriously impressive pirces of sculpture and if you like things on a monumental scale you will love them.
These statues have only been around since the 1980s and I am quite surprised that they are still there , almost 20 years after re-unification. Not surprisingly, many people wanted the statues removed and the park re-named but so far it has been retained because of its apparent historical and artistic significance.
By the way, Engels is the one standing up and Marx is sitting down. I think they are definitely worth a visit if you're in the Alexander Platz area.
