Freiherr vom Stein in front of Berlin's Parliament
by Kakapo2

I admit, I was mostly attracted to the site of Berlin’s parliament (Abgeordnetenhaus) opposite Martin-Gropius-Bau because the statue in front of it depicts Freiherr Heinrich Friedrich Karl vom Stein – and sometimes people jokingly call me Frau vom Stein ;-)

However, it is not only the name. This noble guy (1757 – 1831), born in a castle in Nassau, between Frankfurt and Cologne, was an important Prussian statesman and reformist.
When this building was inaugurated as the site of the Prussian Parliament in 1892, Freiherr vom Stein was long dead. Anyway.

When the Nazis took over the institution of Prussian Parliament (Landtag) was abolished. The building was damaged in World War II and roughly reconstructed from 1947 by the GDR regime. It belonged to the neighbouring building Haus der Ministerien (House of Ministeries). Berlin West’s Parliament (Senat) moved to Schöneberger Rathaus in 1949.

In front of the Abgeordnetenhaus you can see metal markers which show where the Wall was located.

After the reunification the building was restored and inaugurated in April 1993, and brought back to its former use. The debating chamber was fitted with a transparent roof.

Free guided tours are offered on request. You have to book in advance.
