Once upon a time during the reign of Emperor Guangzong (1147-1200), Song Dynasty, his beautiful (I guess she was beautiful) imperial concubine fell seriously sick.
Since the court physicians could not find an effective treatment to cure her ilness, an outside doctor volunteered to cure the concubine. After examining her the doctor wrote out his prescription and predicted the concubine would get well in less than two weeks as long as she followed the prescription.
The emperor and the court physicians were ceptical about the doctor but the true is, after some time the concubine recovered from her ilness.
So, what was that prescription that cured the concubine?
Simmer haws in sugar and water, and eat five to 10 of them before each meal.
The miraculous cure and the healthy food involved that had been prescribed, quickly spreaded among the common people who started to put haws on bamboo skewers, bath them in hot sugar syrup and sell them as snacks.
And this is the true story of the bing1 tang2 hu2 lu2 we know today.
Interesting, isn?t it?
