Getting to Palenque is rather simple but does require planning in advance. To get to Palenque from Cancun you take Route 307 south until you get to Route 186. Turn right and proceed west on Route 186. Be sure to fill up with gas in Escarcega which is the last place to get gas before you reach the turn off for Palenque. From Escarcega its about two hours until you get to Route 199 which will take you to Palenque. From that turn off its about 20 to 30 minutes to the town. The total travel time from Cancun to Palenque is about 10 to 12 hours depending on road construction, which as of Sept. 2007 was in full swing, and how fast you choose to drive. My recommendation would be to just plan on a all day drive and take your time. The roads are only two lanes and in the construction zones the flow of traffic share one lane! Additionally plan on leaving early in the morning as you do not want to do alot of driving at night. Its hard to see and don't be surprised if you end up hitting one of the huge topes (speed bumps) that are not visible at night, much less marked. I hit one going 80km and it was like a scene from a action movie, my car flew through the air and skidded twice on the landing. Luckily it was a rental!
