We did not actually see Castle Howard and its gardens at its best - the day we were there it poured with rain the whole time.
Castle Howard is set dramatically between 2 lakes and is an 18th century palace. It was started in 1699 by Sir John Vanbrugh. Today it is still the home of the Howard family.
We explored the house on our own when we were there but there are guided tours and exhibitions.
castle Howard is probably best known as the setting fo "Brideshead Revisited".
Near the ticket office are farm shops, the chocolate shop, a gift shop with good quality gifts and a cafe with a good varied menu. CLose by is the garden shop with estate grown plants, garden gifts and garden tools and it too has a tearoom.
Unfortunately the heavy rain meant that my camera was in my bag all day - good reason to go back again.
