Most people visit this park for one reason and one reason only: to see Cotopaxi. While there are lots of other things to see here and it could be a national park even without its special aura, Cotopaxi is perhaps the most impressive volcano you are likely to see. Unfortunately, visitors short on time may make the effort and find them futile when the impressive peak hides behind a bank of clouds as it truly does make its own weather. Standing at over 6000 meters and rising out of plateau of 3800 meters it would be an impressive even if less than perfect. But add its nearly perfect symmetrical shape and snow capped peak into the mix and few leave disappointed if lucky enough to see it. It’s hard to believe something this beautiful could have caused so much destruction, having leveled nearby Latacunga three times!

Directions: Cotopaxi is located in its namesake national park, 1.5 hours south of Quito.
